Hopeful Mother......Please let this work.

So, as some of you may know when I moved down here to Southern Illinois I brought with me an orange tabby kitten.  Our neighbors (in Millstadt) had kittens and I had been eyeing one up for a while to have down here.  HOWEVER, let me preface that I DO/ DID NOT want the kitten in the house.... I am not a fan of litter boxes or cats in the house.....it sicks me out.  The sole purpose of the cat was to be outside and catch mice.....since we live in the middle of no where.
Side detail-------------------we name him Bruce.

Bruce comes down here all excited and meets the dogs- loves life in the country.  Until..............................................black cat.  We have another female cat that is evidently extremely territorial.  She will not let him take a step anywhere with out hissing and causing a dramatic cat scene.  One morning Jerad and I were sitting on the swing drinking coffee (when the weather thought it wanted to be Spring) and Bruce was gallivanting around us, rubbing up against things.....minding his own business.  All of a sudden out of no where, here comes black cat AMBUSHING our 3 month old little baby Bruce!!!!  I mean, paws in the air, fur flying, hissing and growling, the whole nine yards.     This was my last straw....... it had gotten so bad that Bruce was staying in the bottom of our grill and WOULD NOT come out.....not to eat.....not to drink.....nothing.   He was living a sad, sad, lonely life on the inside of our grill.

Not wanting to see Bruce like this, Jerad and I discussed that we would bring Bruce inside to hopefully get his health back in order.....get him to eat, and feel safe.   Before even touching the floor, the cat was going to get a bath.    (nervous, yes I was)   I didn't know how he was going to handle the bath-----did I need to get thick gloves?  Did we need to get the band aids and peroxide ready for the scratches that I was about to endure?   I was nervous.....and this cat was DIRTY.
Surprisingly, he LOVED IT!   I gave him the bath in the sink----used warm water and a random shampoo I found in the closet, and he just laid there and let me wash him down.  Easy peasy.  (Thank God)

So, life goes on....... Bruce is inside.    2nd day comes and I already cant stand the litter box inside...... smells aweful.  I know that it is the best thing for him right now to be safe and inside, however this is sick.   There are little rocks all over the place from him dragging it out of the box and then I find splatters of "you know what" outside the box........yeah, not happy.   I guess getting back into eating, his stomache is not really accepting the food and he has diarrhea.  (insert gag here.)
Poor boy..... I know its not his fault..... but our house is now starting to smell like a dump tank at this point.   He is in and out of the litter box every 5 minutes........... and we all know how that feels to have to "go" right then and there.    My heart is sad for him because I know he doesnt feel good.  So Jerad and I do our best to keep cleaning it up and vaccuuming the rocks, etc.

Last night........we have to run to Carbondale to do a few wedding errands.  We come home around 8:30 with full intentions of sitting on the couch and relaxing for the rest of the evening.  This was until I go into the closet to take off my shoes...........

Diarrhea....................all.....................over..................my.....................shoes..................

I dont want to get too graphic in this about the details......but I mean, this cat must have been in a panic when the "urge" struck him.  There was poop EVERYWHERE!  Even on the wall!!
Jerad, bless his heart, he cleaned each and every one of my shoes while I gagged and sweated through cleaning the carpet in the closet.
Even while he was elbow deep in cat poop, he was making jokes left and right to keep me laughing...... I was crying I was laughing so hard.
Needless to say, Bruce's inside lifestyle came to an end last night...... I (gladly) packed up the litter box and carried it right back outside to the garage.  We locked black cat out of there last night, just to think of a resolution to the problem.  The whole point from the beginning  of this was to have Bruce for catching mice and other random critters around here...... and I would like for him to fulfill this expectation.......but with black cat around, he wont even step foot into the outside world.

This morning I decided that I would take him out to Rusty's (our bloodhound) cage.  Hopefully this will be a safe haven for him for awhile, until he gets bigger and decides to show black cat who's boss!  :)
When I put him in it, he LOVED it...... and Lucy was on guard the whole time....... making sure he was okay in there....

For now, I guess we will hope and pray that he will be alright in there...... I mean cats are cats..... they learn to defend themselves.  & Bruce has never been inside except for his 3 day escapade early this week.    I know that he has the instincts to take care of himself.....but it just hurts my heart to know that he was so scared.
Crossing my fingers that this will be our solution........b/c after this, I have no idea what to do.    Cat troubles.......boy oh boy.
